The Virtual World

From the first thing in the morning till the last thing at night we check our phones for any messages or notifications. In today’s world of ever increasing high technology, a smartphone is a necessity than just a means of communication. When I look around, I see that everyone from children to adults has a smartphone. These days’ smartphones are killing conversations. Instead of conversing or talking to the person sitting right next to them, people are deeply engrossed in their phones with either WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

In the past there were no means of communication and only a few well off families were able to afford the expensive mobile phones that merely solved the purpose of calling. However, technology has greatly evolved in a span of less than 30 years. People used to write letters to their friends or family in order to communicate. Now a text message or WhatsApp message through your phone is a quick, easy and convenient replacement for the redundant letters. In order to meet someone, we had to meet them in person. However now, we can simply digitally virtually meet them on skype or facetime. Even conference calls or meeting are nowadays held on these sites. People are so engrossed in their phones that they often miss out on spending quality time with their friends, family and close ones.

However, technology is also used to our advantage in a positive way. Google, the world’s most famous search engine provides us with endless information with the mere click of a button. In the past the only means of reference were books and encyclopaedias from the library. But this information is endless and not categorized by age. As for the social media websites, whatever information we put into them, then is no longer private but accessible to the whole world. Nonetheless, social media is one of the most important reasons why we are still in touch with their old friends.

After analysing all these facts, I feel that the digital world plays a major role in bringing people closer. Without this technology we would not be able to keep in touch with old friends. Even if we are not as intimate with them we still maintain a healthy relationship with them. At the same time, technology also helps us to do things faster and effectively. In summation, I feel it has rightly been said that we all know what is good for us, but need help putting it into practice. This phrase implies to the fact that we should use technology to our advantage and not with bad intentions.
