The International Human Rights Day! What is it about the Human Rights Day that lures us to the topic, to our lives and our Rights? We, stay in an independent country, where we all are aware about our basic rights which briefly include freedom to speech, freedom to our high thoughts, etc. then why do we need an International Human Rights Day to remind us all our rights?
The International Human Rights Day is commemorated every year on the 10th Dec and reminds us about our rights as humans! Every year, you will see International conferences, events, cultural programs and meetings being held by government and non-government organisations, reminding people about their human rights, fighting against issues such as poverty, violence, etc. Every year a new theme is chosen by the United Nations General Assembly and then events are planned and followed to educate people on these issues. This year’s International Human Rights Day has chosen to devote itself to the launch of an year-long campaign celebrating the 50th anniversary of the two International Covenants on Human Rights: The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, that were initially adopted by United Nations General Assembly on the 16th of December, 1966.
These two Covenants together along with Universal Declaration of Human Rights form the International Bills of Human Rights which help settling civil, political, economic and also social rights which are the Birth Rights of all Human beings. Known as “Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always.” is determined to promote and create an awareness amongst the people regarding the two Covenants on their 50th Anniversary! This campaign will revolve around basic themes such as freedom of speech, freedom of want, freedom of worship and also freedom of fear, all rights which were originally underpin the International Bill of Human Rights and were adopted almost 50 years ago.
How can you contribute?
Despite these international events and celebrations, has the plight of humans across the world changed for the betterment? Do people respect each other, love each other and treat each other as equals? People belonging to other religions have mixed feeling about each other. Some respect others, while others don’t. People have the right to worship any god or goddess they believe in, but you will always find some who will not accept you or will ask you to change your Guru or god if you wish to become a part of their life. So, despite of us all being born free and with equal human rights, why is there still this discrimination separating us?
Holding international conferences, meetings, cultural events, exhibitions and even debates is not going to change the thought of people or their actions. You need to change the mindset of people, help them understand the real meaning of Human Rights.
Street plays, songs, poems and an individual’s personal contribution will only help you to make a change around you. Educate people around you, teach them the value of human rights and see how you can really make a difference!
So, make a small Contribution yourself and make a Change on the International Human Rights Day!!
