Here are the many ways you can keep your mane healthy and lustrous throughout the summer without using chemical-intense methods.

Lets’ begin.

Provide a shade

Use scarves or hats to cover the head when out in the hot sun. It prevents your head and mane from attracting harmful UV rays. It also keeps your scalp moisturized. Hat also prevents damages caused to hair due to wind.

It’s time to disentangle your hair

Messy braid is an ideal makeover for summer to reduce the effect of sunrays. Tight hairstyles can be damaging as they pull your hair causing them to tear when you disentangle, especially when your hair is dry due to summer heat.

Don’t wash it frequently

Frequent washing leads to loss of natural oils from your scalp which calls for additional oil production, further making you feel to wash more. Just rinse your hair under a shower at the end of a day spent outside. This will help you get rid of the extra oil. Apply homemade or natural shampoo (dry), like cornstarch, rather than the regular shampoos. You can also dab cotton ball immersed in hazel over your scalp to get rid of excess oil.

Don’t expose your hair too much heat

Reduce blow-drying your hair to as little as possible. Your hair often come in contact of enough heat during summers, exposing them to some more isn’t really a good idea. Avoid using flat-irons also as they further damage the already-dry hair.

Apply natural conditioners

Rinse your hair with natural flavors like apple cider vinegar mixed in water. It is an easy and quick natural conditioner. You can also use some coconut oil and shea butter (be cautious as it is heavy) to smoothen and de-frizz your hair regaining the moisture your hair needs after washing.

For the blondes

You might experience your hair becoming green after spending time in the pool. These are common cases. Don’t worry. Just try rinsing your wet hair with this solution of ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar mixed with 2 cups of water. The discoloration and dullness will vanish. It will also make your hair wet before entering water as it will not absorb much chlorine.

Apply sunscreen

Shampoos may contain UV protection, however, many of them are chemical-laden. Avoid using conventional shampoos. To add some protection to your hair simple run your hands gently through your scalp after you apply sunscreen to your entire body. It’ll protect your mane against the harsh sun rays.

Hot oil rinse

Coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado oil – all of them penetrate well through the hair. Rinse you hair with water and then apply “a hot oil rinse” as you may call it. You’ll see your hair retains the moisture lost due to heat, without being greasy.

Natural hair spray

Make natural homemade sea-salt sprays like one made with a tsp of sea salt mixed with coconut oil and water in some small spray bottle and spritz it on your hair. You’ll observe that coconut oil is the best to counteract dryness of salt.

Use wide-toothed comb rather than a brush. It avoids yanking of hair when it’s wet and most liable to break. Wide-toothed comb is better as it gently caresses your hair whereas brushes lead to pulling and tearing of hair.
